A break from the trend as of late, tonight we check out a movie that isn’t new to me but is new to somebody that I made watch it tonight. We get some science fiction mixed into our car movies, with some classic spooky sauce to top it all off. I will say that this movie is as old as me, so there might be some stuff that won’t hold up as good - but the only real way to find out is to watch, so put on your helmet, tonight is The Wraith.

Tonight is one of the movies that seemed like it’d be an easy give me on a few fronts as far as it goes when it comes time to review time. The pitch is pretty easy - Jackie Chan, everyone’s favorite battle-damaged super star that can’t be stopped, and he hunts demons in ancient China. I mean, easily going to be action scenes, costumes outside the normal, and probably effects work of some kind! Yes, unless I know a full foreign language I’ll most likely need to read, but my eyes are not nearly as sore as the rest of me for existing currently so that’s fine. Time for a mystical romp that’s more than the pitch, tonight we follow The Knight of the Shadows.

You could be amazed that after seeing a trailer for a movie about a romance writer and model being on some shenanigan adventure in the jungle I thought “hey, this should be fun.” Whatever the pitch, the trailer reminded me of other movies I watched at one point or another that i had fun with - those adventure flicks of old that followed that Temple of Doom style. Well, you also know I’m usually one to not bother doing the reviews with the newer movies - on account of spoilers and all of that sort of thing. Well, today we’ll try something relatively new and tackle one of those new-fangled movies while it’s still fresh. Prep for comedy and bring some munchies, tonight we search for The Lost City.

Back to our regularly scheduled programming. Although there is hardly a genre of movie music that I can say is constantly as impressive as that dubbed “Spaghetti Western” I admit I don’t tend to watch a ton of westerns. I’ve never really zeroed in why that is, and most of the time I do decide to watch one it’s already well known and oft enjoyed by the crowd out there that does watch a bunch of them. As alluded to last time, I had something in mind that I wanted to come back to tonight for just such a reason - and to be honest it’s a bit of a cheat since I already have watched it before so I know if I like it already, it’s just a matter that you might not know if I do. Grab those stirrups and slide on your best boots, tonight we draw as fast as we can in The Quick and the Dead.

I got as far as buying the movie I was going to use for tonight - but then a friend pointed out something was on Netflix, and I realized my only true option was to do that instead. Why, you ask? Well, lucky for you a friend recommend I check something out that promises to be a bit more entertaining, better acted, and all around not as much of an assault on the senses. Since that’s the case, the movie that came in the mail this week will be getting pushed - I had thing orders to bring a nice amount of mixing and matching of moods as opposed to my normal run of horror, horror, horror, action, garbage, family friendly lopsided stacking. Tonight, I retreat to the realms of digital viewings and we get to watch a movie that’s a comedy with some action and romance! Yeah, partially out of my normal league, but hey, you’re welcome people who aren’t into the normal buffet selections. This movies about a strange pairing, tonight we look to find if he’s actually Mr. Right.
Read MoreThe staggering length of the desired DVD drought continues, and we once again get to be surprised at what shows up in the mail. Tonight is a more serious note - one based on a true story, complete with an actual picture of the person of whom the story is based on as if to say “yeah, we know anyone can use that label, but we actually did find a real story to make visually impressive.” The lead of the trailers is somebody that I’ve grown to expect to be able to do justice to a wide range of rolls, and the trailers showed me that there’s a mix of good old human darkness to this seemingly whimsical world of dolls - but the question remains if it’s drama will be entertaining or just straight up depressing. Find yourself a nice pair of heels and go save a milkmaid, it’s time to look at Welcome To Marwen.

The day of reviewing this is Valentines Day, and although I’m sure the originally slated movie would have worked fine, it isn’t every day that movie night falls on the same day as a holiday. Of course, of all holidays this is one that I’ve got probably the least motivation to watch the main themed movies - I just don’t dig straight romance movies. The only one that would come to mind that I’d willfully re-subject myself to is in fact The Princess Bride, but that’s already been done on here - so instead, I find another movie that has some romance at it’s core, but that despite all logic I still haven’t gotten to on here. Tonight, we get to see if a big, red, spooky devil Tim Curry is all horns and no evil - tonight, we watch Legend.
Read MoreAnother installment of “waitstaff recommends.” Now, I like me monsters of all kinds, and del Toro has given me plenty of those sorts to enjoy over the years I’ve known of him as a creator. One would think that in turn this movie would have already been in my queue before this, but to be frank it largely was marketed as a romance movie from anyone I had heard speak of it review-wise and well, if we couldn’t guess from previous entries, I’m more of a dumb action and cheesy horror kind of person so I had passed it up. Still, when it comes up as a recommendation, who am I to decline? Let’s see if it can live up to it’s praise or if I find something to be fishy, let’s check out The Shape of Water.
Read MoreI generally stray away from Christmas movies - I'm one of those people who usually get mildly bummed out by the holiday, particularly after being forced to watch A Christmas Story for the eleven bazillionth time as the lazy television stations all show it on repeat. That being said, time flows by and sometimes things change - I still don't want to watch A Christmas Story pretty much ever again in my life, but sometimes it feels like busting one out from the vault isn't such a terrible idea. This is one of those years, and our entry is not only that but a musical - what most of my kind would consider a "double whammy," considering my usual dislike of musicals to boot. You know what though? Maybe a trip to the past is just what everybody needs this season.

Read MoreMy sister got married just last weekend, so I decided to use it as an excuse to break out another one of the "old guns" for this week. Even if you haven't seen it, I wouldn't be surprised if you've heard someone quoting it and just not known what they where on about. The real question isn't if this is a good movie - of that I'll go into detail later - but does it hold up well enough that it would still be a good movie for a newer generation. I'd argue that it should just fine, but at the same time if you look at some modern movie goers surely a little resistance wouldn't be Inconceivable!
Read MoreRemember when I mentioned back in Kingsman that it's been a while since I saw a spy flick that I really enjoyed? Well, I'd try and use the same setup for the whole under-ground art selling circuit movie, but I couldn't really think of any of them. I mean, my memory is bad yes, but totally drawing a null there - The closest I can come up with is Monuments Men, but that was more of a war-kind of flick then it was particularly a particular art-thief kind of flick. The closest thing I could think of with this installment of "Depp plays a weird character" was actually (maybe not so oddly) Mr. Bean. Is that a good thing? I guess that's a real mustache question.

Read MoreJackie Chan! Yeah! I know there's folks out there (due to pure statistical probabilities alone) that balk at the idea of watching Jackie Chan movies, but I like the guy. Sure, some movies are cooler than others, and some of them haven't been available till long after the fact here (which has lead to a bit of misleading time-frames in titles), but I've generally not had him in a movie that I regretted watching. Hadn't heard of City Hunter before, so I thought it would be a good chance to check it out, you know? Hopefully it delivers a city-worth of enjoyment and doesn't leave me hunting for my alarm clock.

Read MoreRight off the bat, I'm going to get this warning out of the way: this movie is not for the kids, at all. If you read the description (particularly on Netflix) this movie ends up sounding like it was meant to be some kind of raunchy flick in disguise as a real movie - and indeed, there is a lot of naked in it. What actually got me to watch it was another review (on said Netflix), that elaborated on how they should really change the description because it doesn't really fully engross what the movie is about. So yeah, you watch what sounds good, and that person's little review did a number to make it sound like this could be quite a good flick (I mean, stopping time is always fun, right?) and it's been a bit of time since I've watched a movie that was more artsy then simply how to blow things up / kill things in the coolest fashion.

Yeah, needless to say this isn't my type of movie, but then again neither was Stranger than Fiction, and I still enjoyed that one.
