The Dark Tower (2017)

March 22, 2018  /  Ken Rupracht

There was once a man who lead us to cancel the apocalypse. He's also been an all-seeing guardian, a boss pilot, a historical figure, and plenty of other things. Most people would argue that he's a dang good actor with a the good luck to only appear in a bad movie once in a while. In most recent times, this one would probably be the one that I heard the most grief about - and, fancy that, it's yet again another Stephen King movie. Strap on your gats and let's find out if I took a shine to this one as well.

Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris (1999)

March 15, 2018  /  Ken Rupracht

I had meant to come back an finish of this branch of Gamera for a while after figuring out that I actually really enjoyed it's two predecessors. Between that and another "large scale" movie looming around the corner that suits similar interests, I figured what better time than now. It's take three, and this time something named Iris is joining the fray for revenge. Will the hero of children mega-turtle be able to hold strong once again?

Kong: Skull Island (2017)

Considering how much I love watching Godzilla movies, it might be a surprise for the browser to find no real entries of the monkey kind in these pages. Well, I'll be honest - although I appreciate the original King Kong for what it is and it's great effects (at the very least for the time), I've just never been a Kong fan - I always preferred the big radioactive lizard instead. Well, this one had me scratching my skull thinking that maybe it'd be something I could get into a bit easier than it's predecessors and perhaps I should watch if he's going to be popping up in the next 'zilla movie, so let's spin the classic rock and paint the Island black, tonight we check out Kong: Skull Island.

The Poughkeepsie Tapes (2007)

March 01, 2018  /  Ken Rupracht

MV5BMTI0MjgzNzMyOF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMDM0MzU1MQ@@._V1_UY268_CR7,0,182,268_AL_.jpg

This should be subtitled "The movie that gave me a headache." At first, I was a bit excited for this one - since Poughkeepsie isn't a made up place and the documentary style fit's something that I normally enjoy - documentaries and learning about things, even if those things are macabre. It's New York baby, and if there's one thing that would be real interesting to me it'd be learning about the things that make the apple bump in the night - be it art that imitated real life or the other way around, such dark things that you may be familiar with if you've ever heard of Cropsy. After the DvD arrived, i saw it said "Mockumentary" in the description, and my enthusiasm dimmed slightly, but I've seen a good many of those that at the least remained highly entertaining. The only way to figure out if this cranial illness I'm now plagued with is from good or bad is going to be to stick around though, so let's get to the point.

It (2017)

February 22, 2018  /  Ken Rupracht

Man, it really seems like I'm on some kind of anti-kid streak with this movie selection lately eh? Setting that coincidental queue flow aside, a more open question would be haven't we been here before? Well, it has all the setups to be something that everyone hates - a version that people can already call nostalgically "their version", being based on a book so all the worms can cry foul, and set in a horror genre where people can feast cliches ad nauseum - and yet, I heard nothing but good things about it. In a world slathered by people jumping to nay-say at the slightest movie produced, could this be golden chalice upon a fabled table, or is this the one time things are supposed to be good and I find myself in the hole of disappointment?

Class of 1999 (1990)

February 15, 2018  /  Ken Rupracht

MV5BNWE5MzAwMjQtNzI1YS00YjZhLTkxNDItM2JjNjM3ZjI5NzBjXkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyMTQxNzMzNDI@._V1_UX182_CR0,0,182,268_AL_.jpg

I made the mistake of watching the news this morning on accident. If I were any normal human I may feel bad about my movie choice for this week. Thankfully for me, I'm not and I don't. Tonight's movie is that lovely apocalyptic future-vision that marks "the future" of it's time as our current past, but somehow ends up being more entertaining than the feel-good visions of the future from before it. When the kids aren't alright, sometimes they need a prescription grade dose of robo-teacher. Tonight, we join the class of 1999.

Dave Made a Maze (2017)

February 08, 2018  /  Ken Rupracht

MV5BZWYwOTgyYzQtYjdjZC00ZGE4LWExM2ItZTczZGEzMDY4OTU0XkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyMTY2NTQ3ODc@._V1_UY268_CR4,0,182,268_AL_.jpg

The funny thing about originality on a personal basis is that the most original thing is usually that which you come across first - which is how even the oldest of movies can feel cliched despite being the originator of the cliches. For the first time in a long time, I give you something that I really haven't seen done quite like this before - and at this point, I've probably forgotten more movies than the average person just based on pure saturation alone. A trailer that promises creative visuals and potentially more than just the right amount of weird yanked my interest train on new rails, but lets see if Dave Made a Maze has what it takes to be a promised fun or if it ends as nothing more than a half-bull in a paper plate store.

Frailty (2001)

MV5BMTIxNTE2MTY1Ml5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTYwODYyMTc2._V1_UY268_CR0,0,182,268_AL_.jpg

We've had a good run of mindless fun here as of late. Plenty of movies that didn't require a whole lot of thinking, just to sit back and enjoy - some even that were improved by not thinking too much about it! Well, tonight's option is gonna flip that switch to get a little more out of that wrinkled blob in our skulls. Grab your sleuth hat and your crusader garb, it's time to find out just how belief-worthy Frailty is.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017)

January 25, 2018  /  Ken Rupracht

MV5BMTkxMDAxNDUyNV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwOTc3MzcxMjI@._V1_UX182_CR0,0,182,268_AL_.jpg

Amidst a slew of movie reviews that churned out the words "mediocre" and "worst ever" a little science fiction flick from a guy whose name I recognized popped out. So slathered was it in a rabble of unimpressed thoughts that I didn't manage to get it in my queue rotation until just now. I may not be expecting a return to The Fifth Element levels of fun, but I as usually expect a better movie that what has been sold to me from peers the world across - which seems fitting for a movie set in a city of a thousand planets. Grab your future pants, and lets take a jump into the mix and see what's on sale.

Baby Driver (2017)

January 18, 2018  /  Ken Rupracht

MV5BMjM3MjQ1MzkxNl5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwODk1ODgyMjI@._V1_UX182_CR0,0,182,268_AL_.jpg

I don't know about you, but I haven't really heard anyone go "Don't see Baby Driver, it's bad." I was actually pretty interested to see this when it was in theaters - just not enough so to spend the money and see it in theaters. Sometimes it's a bit hard to motivate yourself like that - but it got added to my rental queue as soon as possible so I could check it out. Promises of a good soundtrack and nice car-based action had the DvD spinning, but the ever-present question is if what's under the hood can back up the frame, or we are going to be left in the exhaust.

Bright (2017)

January 11, 2018  /  Ken Rupracht

MV5BMTcyNzk5NDg1Nl5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNTM5MDQxNDM@._V1_UX182_CR0,0,182,268_AL_.jpg

Bright is another in a string of Netflix Originals that I've seen a trailer for and thought "Hey, I should check this out at some point."  Then I did. It's a pretty simple thought process on that one, no recommendation or hidden gem digging or anything of that sort, but it seems nothing these days is without some form of story behind. For whatever reason, critical acclaim this thing did not get - in fact, as far as the critics are concerned there are better Stephen King adaptations than this movie. Let's dive in to see if they bright or dim.

Underworld: Blood Wars (2016)

January 04, 2018  /  Ken Rupracht

MV5BMjI5Njk0NTIyNV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNjU4MjY5MDI@._V1_UX182_CR0,0,182,268_AL_.jpg

Did you know this movie existed? I know I didn't, until I was refilling my DvD queue - and then thought to myself "Oh what, they made another one of these? Well I saw the others might as well add this in." The old latex-clad killer of nocturnal creatures is back, but is it something that's worth coming back for? Yeah, we enjoyed the fresh and new take in the first movie, but surely by now it's novelty has waned enough that it couldn't possibly be fun anymore, right? Sharpen those teeth, and let's sink in to this artery to find out.
