Sonic the Hedgehog (2020)

August 13, 2020  /  Ken Rupracht

A trailer came out, and people went nuts - but not really in a good way. People ripped into the effects work, to such an extent that extra work had to be done to change it. Really, that’s a somewhat interesting on it’s own right, as you really don’t get that from trailer feedback and movie studios - but it doesn’t end there. In a bizarre twist, the internet went ballistic about something and then supported it when changes were made! That is to say, usually the internet will get in an uproar about something - like “will not buy if changes aren’t made1” and then buy it anyways, whereas this time around people seemed to stick to the word and thought of “if it changes you have my money.” So it did better than anyone would have though, but how much of it is because it’s a good movie and how much is for good intentions? Tonight, we go fast with the movie version of Sonic The Hedgehog.

The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997)

Have you ever wondered if there is some form of reverse nostalgia? Like, movies that everyone remember as not great, but maybe they weren’t that bad and we all just got so set in the belief they weren’t that it’s public hive-mind on quality? As a case, who do you know that hates the first Jurassic Park? Who do you remember that really loved the other ones? For example - the only thing I really remember of the second is “dino in the city” and everyone complaining about gymnastics beating the raptor. Well, I’m thinking it’s time to go back - we’ve already revisited the first of the dino-park movies a while back and enjoyed how it held up. Will the first of the sequels hold up as well as the original, or could it be as dated as a fossil in the ground? Tonight, we revisit The Lost World: Jurassic Park.

Black Christmas (2019)

July 30, 2020  /  Ken Rupracht

The original Black Christmas is up there as one of the original slashing flicks out there. It’s also particularly old. As it turns out, someone decided it needed a remake - kind of. Look, every good remake can’t just be a carbon copy of the original - art reflects the times, and there’s no point in simply just retreading an identical story. The story needs to be made one’s own. Of course, the times can bring with it some shifts in perspective that won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but there’s really only one way to find out, and I’ve been out of the slasher field for a while, so let’s see what happens. In a complete farse of seasonal planning, tonight we check out Black Christmas - from 2019.

I feel that tonight’s movie was something that people didn’t quite know what to make of when it came out. On one hand, it was animated - so it must be for kids, right? The other hand brought with it a very heavy atmosphere and a lot less whimsical tone than you would think of an animated movie about little puppet people. In turn, you had a lot of folks that probably anticipated a whimsical and nice adventure romp and found out they were in for something much heavier. Still, I don’t remember not liking it at the time, so let’s see how age has treated the computer work and story of 9.

Detective Dee: The Four Heavenly Kings (2018)

It’s been a while so I’ll forgive anyone who forgot, but some may recall a long while ago I mentioned how I love a series from overseas centering around a certain detective character. Now, China has a bunch of good movies - I’m sure plenty of them never even made it over here for me to check out. Well, they’ve been in and out of Netflix, but I think it’s about time I return to the series that taught me perhaps I have a fascination with characters with single-syllable names: Detective Dee takes on The Four Heavenly Kings.

The Witches (1990)

Do you want a family movie that’ll potentially scar your kids forever? Well I tell you what, they don’t make them like they used to! Tonight’s little tale will have you second guessing that next candy bar, wondering if it’s the witches or the diabetes that’s going to get you. Of course, as a grown person perhaps you won’t be nearly as effected as you may have once been when seeing this one - maybe it’s actually not good at all, and just that coating of nostalgia causing you to hold it higher in regards than it actually deserves. There be but one way to really find out, so steel yourself for The Witches.

Hell Comes to Frogtown (1988)

Hey eighties, it’s been a while. Have you been good? Oh what, you’ve got something staring a wrestler, frog mutants, and plenty of raunchy fun like only the eighties could give? Well, I mean, I don’t want to be rude so I guess we better watch it right? Oh, it’s not a bluray copy, so it’s probably going to be a little bit smoothed out by the player? That’s okay eighties, we’ll survive as long as this bone you brought me isn’t explosive. Tonight’s entry might not be super high class cinema - but heck, even the trailer I saw for it makes no claims at being such. Set your sensibilities aside and insert your Rowdy Roddy, tonight Hell Comes to Frogtown.

Enough comedy for a bit, it’s time to get serious! Take a trip in the time machine back to the days where color wasn’t fully invented yet, and Europe was having a bit off a tiff that would draw in the world around it. Tonight’s movie looked alright in the trailers - nothing perhaps that stand out to me, hence me waiting till now to see it - but what changed to make me interested? Well, I hear this entire movie is set up as though it’s one big long take, similar to Silent House that we looked at forever ago. Well, I’m a sucker for some smooth movie tricks, so it’s time to get the old metal helmets out and get those feet ready for some nasty trenches, tonight we go back to 1917.

Guns Akimbo (2019)

Forever ago, I once saw a meme of a man with two guns and a bathroom robe standing in the street with a tagline something along the lines of “Crack, not even once.” The man was Radcliffe - and it was making jokes about the picture as it would tie to Harry Potter. Years, and I mean Years later, the movie that that still shot came from finally has a trailer, and I add it to the queue. Tonight, the queue gives us that movie - toted as an action comedy by it’s genre tags. Yes, I realize I’m horrible at sticking to my plan of not overlapping genres - but if there’s something nobody should really complain about, it’s there being a little extra humor in their lives, so I think we are all still probably okay right? Keep both hands free, because tonight we go Guns Akimbo.

Slaughterhouse Rulez (2018)

I’m cheating my own system - I found a horror comedy. For me, it technically gets filed as “oh look, a monster movie!” but it’s also not beyond me that with both Simon Pegg and Nick Frost name dropped on it, I also expect a bit of comedy. What you should also expect is some old school schooling - because with a name like this and all those uniforms, it’s about to get real fancy up in here. Tonight, we find out why Slaughterhouse Rulez.

Stuber (2019)

It’s a buddy cop movie with a twist - the partner isn’t a cop, but an Uber driver! Get with the times, the future is now! Look, in the mix of things I’ve got slotted this year, I’m doing what I can to try and be more mixed up this year, jumping between different genres - which isn’t to say that we won’t hit a stint where it’s going to be repeat excursions or anything - and in the process the comedy decided to be this week. It looked entertaining by the trailers, so I figured why not? Everyone needs a laugh now and then, and this one looked like if nothing else it should provide some dumb jokes for a good laugh - and you look at that movie poster and tell me that it doesn’t seem like it’s gonna be one weird ride! Tonight, we hook a ride with Stuber.

Underwater (2020)

Underwater is somewhat of a mixed headline bag - I’ve seen “soulless ripoff” and all sorts of other things thrown at it. Heck, after watching the trailers all I could think of was the old underwater terror movies like Abyss. What I wasn’t expecting was a bunch of people to tell me that it’s more like an Alien knock-off. Well, I already knew I was going to watch, but now I had to figure out what people were going on about - and that niggling interest in seeing if it’s going to be another one of the few movies where Stewart can act or if she’s been re-delegated to stone-faced one expression. Prepare to get wet, we are gonna dive right on in!

Last entry we took a dive into the infuriating and supposedly scary Paranormal franchise, so this week I think we could all use a little relief. Well, lucky for you a friend recommend I check something out that promises to be a bit more entertaining, better acted, and all around not as much of an assault on the senses. It’s part romance, part spy thriller style mystery - and it’s got Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp in it! Right about now everyone would like to travel, so why don’t we go and check out The Tourist.

Paranormal Activity Franchise (2007 - 2015)

May 14, 2020  /  Ken Rupracht

MV5BMjY1NjcxODQ4MV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMzUxNjM4Mg@@._V1_UX182_CR0,0,182,268_AL_.jpg

I couldn’t stomach doing these as individual entries. If you’ve listened to any of the Watch-Alongs I’ve done of three of these things, you’d also be fully aware that my overall opinion of the franchise is negative. Still, perhaps it’s about time I gave the franchise an acknowledgment since it seems to be popular enough that it keeps getting more - so maybe, just maybe, we can consider this a learning experience, because there are certainly some things I wouldn’t mind talking about. Tonight, we talk about the Paranormal Activity franchise.

Jojo Rabbit (2019)

This one came recommended from a coworker and a podcast that I watch. Probably a bunch of other people would recommend it too, seems like one of those kind of movies where it’d get a good reception. It’s also not entirely out of my field book either - I’ve enjoyed other humorous romps involving some form of Hitler before - such as The Producers. Still, let’s satiate that wanting to know and just get right down to it, tonight’s movie is JoJo Rabbit.

Knives Out (2019)

Is there any way tonight’s movie can possibly live up to the hype? I mean, it’s not that everyone has been saying raving things about it or something like that - more just I’ve wanted to see it since I saw a trailer in the theaters, and that’s a pretty lengthy amount of time after numerous thwartings in the mail-roulette. The trailer tells me to expect some good fun like in Clue, and the cast tells me it should be pretty good acting - but will the mystery hold up? Will there be surprises and fun? I guess there’s only one way to tell - it’s time for Knives Out.

Color Out of Space (2019)

Next week is a hopeful main course that’s been waited for for weeks - this week is a movie that was going to be last week’s movie but I wanted to not bundle up the genres too much. Cosmic horror. The very terror that is indescribable, assaulting the mind and driving any attempt at describing it to sheer madness. Yeah, movies don’t always fair the best when it comes to capturing the very things that escape description - but that doesn’t mean they haven’t had any good entries. Lovecraftian movies are abound if you look about for them - and I’ll admit that it’s a gamut of good and bad - but tonight’s movie has a secret weapon - Nicolas Cage. It’s not all dark and lifeless out there, tonight we check out Color Out of Space.

Mr. Right (2015)

As seems to be the norm, the queue has forsaken sending me available movies in order, and instead continues it’s chaotic grab-bag or mockery. Since that’s the case, the movie that came in the mail this week will be getting pushed - I had thing orders to bring a nice amount of mixing and matching of moods as opposed to my normal run of horror, horror, horror, action, garbage, family friendly lopsided stacking. Tonight, I retreat to the realms of digital viewings and we get to watch a movie that’s a comedy with some action and romance! Yeah, partially out of my normal league, but hey, you’re welcome people who aren’t into the normal buffet selections. This movies about a strange pairing, tonight we look to find if he’s actually Mr. Right.

So this is going to be a bit different, as it’s a bit of a joint review. See, VR users have had access to a program called Bigscreen for a while - formerly Bigscreen Beta, currently Bigscreen VR I believe. As you might guess from the name, it’s got a bit of a movie theater vibe to it - and at some point they managed to get a deal with Paramount that allows them to sell tickets to digital showings - so, for example, you pay 5 bucks for a ticket, and then get to go watch tonight’s movie for example. I figured that it’s time to get into it a bit, because one of the big punchilnes of it is 3D showings - and my little eyes tend to get more from 3D when in VR for some odd reason, and tonight’s movie is said to have some good 3D effects, so it all just sort of aligns. Get yourselves all cranked up, it’s time to go check out Hugo.

Missing in Action 2: The Beginning (1985)

Alright, so I get some pretty weird reasons that I watch specific movies sometimes - I think we can all agree on that. I was a little disappointed when what I had hoped would show up in the mail didn’t earlier this week, but that’s okay. I’m working - yeah, I’m one of those lucky jack-wagon’s that’s still reporting to duty on a daily basis to grind those gears at their day job whilst the rest of the population seems to lose it’s mind - and that St. Elmo’s fire song comes on my listening device, and as I’m listening to it all of a sudden I have some flashback action. Straight up thrown back in time and remembering that good old Chuck Norris movie The Delta Force - because one way or another, that theme is in the song or inspired from the song unless it’s one of those fortuitous events of spontaneous simultaneous creations. Either way, it got the movie stuck in my head - and then I find out that I either misplaced my DVD copies of Delta Force or don’t own them (preposterous!) - so I figured I’d do Missing in Action instead, but realized I already have. Tonight, we get to check out the sequel prequel to Missing in Action because it’s part of the three-pack I own, it’s time for The Beginning.
