The Electric State (2025)

I’ve been seeing an absolute ton of headlines just trashing a recent movie lately, so of course I’m automatically interested in it. Since it’s out on Netfilx, it also means there is no barrier to entry for me watching it, since I already have that subscription. Is this thing as bad as it would seem, or is it another case of people experimenting with “negative opinions get more clicks?” I can’t say for sure, because I didn’t click a single one of those headlines - but I sure can check the movie out. Grab your nostalgia pants and plug in your extension cord, tonight we watch The Electric State.

Pitch Black (2000)

I’m exhausted tonight. so I’ve picked a movie that is both low brain power requirements and also set somewhere that looks so much warmer than the crap cold outside. It even ended up starting a franchise - although how good of a thing that is will probably depend on who you ask. The main actor really loved the character if nothing else, so regardless of who else might like it he’s got his own back for sure. Hope you aren’t afraid of the dark, tonight we are watching Pitch Black.

Serenity (2005)

It’s a brand new year - is it a brand new you? If you’ve been around enough, you may remember me mentioning that I do some charity streaming and like to theme it - last year was giant robots, on of those things that I love but not everyone sees the draw to, making it kind of hard to find fitting movies. This year, I was going to be running through some of the Mass Effect games - but I could have done the animated movie for that but it’d be a bit on the nose so I decided to do something that’s a little last year and a little this year instead. Let’s combine my constant memory-loss ridden feature of having thought I already did a movie with a science fiction blast that has bad guys that start with an R. Yeah, buckle up space cowboys, tonight we are going back and re-watching (we both know we’ve all seen it plenty) Serenity.

Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation (2004)

I could pick a nice winter themed movie since it’s winter, but instead I picked something with bugs. Why? Honestly, because I watched it forever ago so in theory it makes the review part a lot quicker to do. Well, that and who knows, maybe it’ snot as bad as I remember it being. Everyone remembers the first movie, some of us have read the book and wondered how the two could end up being so functionally different - and a bunch of us must have watched the second movie because they gave us a third - and movie companies don’t do that if they don’t think they’ll make money. Funny part is, you never hear anyone talking about two or three - so heck with it, tonight we jump back into the front and watch Starship Troopers 2.

Escape From New York (1981)

1997. New York City is now a maximum security prison. Breaking out is impossible. Breaking in is insane.

On tonight’s edition of “I’m surprised I haven’t done that,” we’ll be hitting up a movie as old as I am with one of my favorite actors in it. Also with a director I really enjoy. Who happens to be a musician I like as well. Yeah, there’s a lot of me liking this - but that doesn’t mean it’s going to be all peachy clean and impressive stands right? Guess you’ll have to read or listen on to find out as tonight we visit what I think is the best thing to start with the words escape from - get your best edgy hero on, tonight it’s time to Escape from New York.

Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982)

Tonight’s the perfect night for the right horror movie. Like the planets aligning, it’s a movie night that also is a Halloween night! Well, I already did a bunch of those movies, so it makes it a bit hard to line it up right - but I found a fix. Is it a trick or a treat? Regardless of your costume, tonight we are learning to hate commercials with Halloween 3.

Alien: Romulus (2024)

Can’t have a new movie in some of my favorite franchises without putting it on here right! Yep, to complete our Pokemon set, we get to delve into the newest flick that dropped just this week - it’s been a good month for releases between this and the newer Beetlejuice movie, if for nothing else but my nostalgia. We got our laughs out of the way last week, and too much laughing can cause some serious cramps, and that’s a horrific feature of the body. Speaking of body horror, scream all you want in space - it’s time for Alien: Romulus.

RoboCop (1987)

Remember that one time I did a whole lot of reboot movies as a temporary review theme? Here’s another one that I never did the original one for despite having watched it numerous times. Yeah, sure, we could be doing literally any movie this week - but I’ve been playing a lot of a certain game that involves big armored dudes killing bad guys with fancy guns, so I feel like it’s pretty fitting on top of that. Get ready for some 80’s ultra-violence that somehow spawned an entire line of toys and cartoons, the police have an upgrade and it’s name is RoboCop.

Maximum Overdrive (1986)

Just when you thought it was safe, I have a continued streak of bum luck and decide that I have a fever. Everyone knows there’s only one cure for a fever, and that’s cowbell -but I want some movie-equivalent of a cowbell. Well, cows are pretty dumb animals on average with their moments of understanding, but also can be pretty dangerous, and a bell makes noise, so I guess that mean’s I’m forcing everyone to watch a movie about sonic cows. Haha, nah - I’m just kidding. That’s probably a movie that would be held in higher regard then what i’m about to give everyone an excuse to watch (or re-watch) tonight! Put on your Spider-man outfit, get all those cries of Emilioooooo out of your system and try to do less cocaine than the director - tonight we strap in for Maximum Overdrive.

Godzilla: Minus One/Minus Color (2023)

Like a good number of folks who end up liking monsters and science fiction, it’s no surprise that I enjoy the Godzilla franchise. Whether it’s dipping my toes into the original Goijra and reading my little eyes out or revisiting my favorite Hesei arc or the absurdity of Final Wars I’m here for it. Heck, you can find my thoughts on a good deal of them here already. I was pretty happy when Netflix ended up finally getting the normal version of tonight’s choice up for watching - so much so I didn’t even wait to do it for here. Now though, they even have the fancy black and white version - so what better excuse do I have to get my thoughts out on this one? Yeah, that’s right, tonight we dive into Godzilla Minus One, Minus Color.

Virus (1999)

Well, I had everything planned out and then something went wrong and the regularly scheduled post - the only one I’ve done at the start of the week so it’d be ready to post when I was off on vacation - did in fact not post. To make up for it, I posted that one yesterday, and now you get this weeks movie - which I figured I’d flow with the convention I went to, which was all about a virus that effects machines and people and stuff and the year 1999. How could I tie into that? How about a movie about alien electricity that takes over technology and starts making terminators that was released in the year 1999? Yeah, I’m a little surprised I never hit this one either, tonight we check out Virus.

Tag (2015)

All high school girls out there: You are a little too obnoxious so we decided to reduce your numbers.

So I’m out of town the day of this getting posted - going up north(er) for a convention, but that doesn’t stop me from trying to hold to my one movie a week minimum schedule that I’ve upheld for over 14 years now. I know not everyone gets why I’d go through the extra effort - I mean, I don’t really earn anything out of it - but at the same time, that just makes it more fitting for this weeks chosen movie. See, I saw this thing a long time ago, and it holds the title of being the only movie that took me longer to explain what happened in the first ten minutes of the movie than it would if you just watched it - and both methods would probably just leave you totally confused. Ha, yeah, a this should be a interesting one - a little something special to make up for the pre-written report yeah? Don’t get it confused by that more modern movie about he popular kids game or you are in for a real shocking time, tonight we watch Tag.

We've always believed we weren't alone. On July 4th, we'll wish we were.

Would you believe me if I said that there’s a perfect movie for tonight, and yet I haven’t done it? Of course you would, I’ve not done obvious movies a ton and heaven knows how many movies I thought I did and never actually did. In this case, I’ve even done the sequel and not the original, so just further shame to the pile I suppose. Anyways, let’s correct it and go back to a classic I’ve seen dozens of times already but wouldn’t mind watching again, because today is Independence Day.

You know what I really, really haven’t done in a while? An anthology flick. So tonight I bag two windows with a single rock, as one of my buddies has also been wanting to watch more anime. Admittedly, I’ve seent his before - that much isn’t entirely a surprise - but I also really only recall two parts of it from memory - and one part is cheating because it was attached to a music video that i really liked that caused me to seek out the movie when that became a thing that could be done - that’s the power of those home made music videos back before the slightest amount of audio on something like youtube would get a video flagged and taken down forever. Anyways, as much fun as it is to reminisce, we should probably go and take a look at a different set of Memories.

Atlas (2024)

Got a fresh new one for everyone tonight. This year’s charity stuff is themed around mechs - you know, those wonderful giant robots piloted by folks made famous by such known franchises as Gundam and Mechwarrior. Given that fact, it only makes sense to me that when a new giant robot movie comes out I have to get up on it quick. This one seems to be a bit of a wiffle-waffle at the bat when it comes to reviews, so let’s see what I think about it. Tonight we find out if the world is on it’s shoulders, tonight we watch Atlas.

The Creator (2023)

Working my way through my backlog list, one step at a time - this time with the intelligence to do it while it’s on a streaming service I already pay for so I don’t have to buy it separate to do a review! I’ve already seen a good bit of different scenes of this one, mostly on account of blowing up all that effects work - so despite some mild worries about the movie being preachy, I’m sold to have a good time at least in one department. Could be another situation of preaching to the choir this time - but the only way to find out is to watch. Plug in and make sure you aren’t set to standby, tonight we watch The Creator.

Dead Zone (2022)

My cousin loves Michael Jai white movies, so I found him one for his birthday. The pitch? Looks like a zombie movie, sounds like a spec ops budget-Umbrella Corp movie, and stars a dude that’s absolutely baller at doing fight scenes. How could you not think of it all and go “nah, I don’t want to see this at all.” Try and figure out what Tubi is, tonight is Dead Zone.

Appleseed (2004)

In the recent years I keep assigning some theme to the charity streams I do. This year, I decided to do mechs, because I love giant robots like everyone else does - but I ran into a bit of a problem with having already done most the movies that immediately come into mind. And thus, I delved back - way back, like DVD back and the early 2000s - to find something to watch from my collection. I came up with two choices, one more fantasy than the other, and then pitched them both to my watch-mates, who opted for the more 3D animated one. Learn to love your robot boyfriend, tonight we watch Appleseed.

Rebel Moon: Part One - A Child of Fire (2023)

And it comes to this - the final review of 2023. There’s really an endless number of movies I could go after to do, but I was excitedly waiting for the one I’ve opted to go for to come out, and decided that that’s what we’ll do. There’s been a bunch of reviews for it all over the place, and a bunch of them aren’t exactly positive - so one has to wonder is it a case of a director just not getting a break from an audience, is it actually not all that good, or perhaps is it just a bunch of people not appreciating what’s there? Much like the transition to a new year, there’s a lot of tumultuous waters of uncertainty clogging the view - so the best way is to find out directly and experience it ourselves. Tonight, we look at the first part of Rebel Moon.
