Constantine (2005)

Do you remember the time before the Marvel menace, when all comic movies were just the worst thing ever? Ha! Trick question, there was no such time! Alright, according to some there was, but quite frankly there's always been good ones and bad ones in my opinion, and largely since I'm just looking to be entertained and judge things on a personal enjoyment level more so than the critical gross profit success that companies really care about, I've enjoyed a comic-themed movie that was released way back in 1981 (which may not have been the actual first one I saw in my lifetime, but is probably one of the oldest ones film chronology wise). In recent years, I've become a bit burnt out on them - not because they are bad movies in any sense, but purely on the saturation of them. Still, I figured that we might as well go back at least a little ways and check out Constantine and see how that one holds up.

The Hurricane Heist (2018)

I'm drawn to movies like the entry for tonight. A concept that's outrageous, and yet also somehow makes a lot of sense, but by it's very nature makes you go "well this ought to be stupid fun." It happens a lot to me - and most of the time I wait for home release to watch these movies, because the situation here is that it's just cheaper for me, and although I find high probability in enjoyment, they never feel like the necessitate the extra travel and pay for a larger screen with better sound options. Still, this hurricane caper came of as pretty corny when I saw the trailer, so lets find out if this hurricane really blows.

Batman: Gotham by Gaslight (2018)

I wasn't super impressed with the last animated Batman movie that I checked out. Sure, it wasn't bad and it did have some bat-crap insane segments to it that I could appreciate, but there were moments when the quality just felt like it was subpar and I overall didn't think they really used the setting or concept to it's fullest. Well, of course they decided to make a Batman movie set just about in as old-timey not-London as it could possibly get. Color me interested, and remind your family to look at those MPAA ratings - it's time for the Bat to fight the Jack.

The Blob (1988)

I know, I know - "You already did The Blob" - but I didn't do this one. See, Blobby here is one of those movies that every so often crops up again, gets that (at the time) modern flair and set back out. Although the modern audience may act like remakes are new and the absolute worst thing ever, they've been around probably about as long as film's existed in some way or form. Still, I love monster flicks, I love camp, and more than actual remakes themselves I love to see just what's changed between people's takes. For those abundant reasons, it's time for us to once again run screaming in terror over the gooey jello of death and find out if the flavor is delicious or gross.

Jurassic Park (1993)

It might seem like I'm behind schedule on putting out a dinosaur movie to cash in on the sudden resurgence of the Jurassic franchise, but in all honesty it's just a mistiming in the queue delivery causing me to find a backup movie to do for this week and going "wow, I haven't done a single one of those movies eh?" So here we have it - Jurassic Park. It's been a while since I watched it, and there is always that lingering feeling of wanting to perhaps pick up that 3d edition I saw existed, but how well does it hold up after all these years? Is it just nostalgia coloring the world, or is it actually as impressive as dinosaurs stomping around in a park? Lets sit down and see just how extinct these dinosaurs really are.

I Kill Giants (2017)

Occasionally you see a title and a trailer and think "well, this could be fun." Honestly, it happens more often than not for me, but in this case I had a few reservations. Of course, nothing that was going to stop me from watching the movie in the slightest - simply an observational wariness based on past experiences. In this movie pitched as a kid versus giants, there would be a statistical lean towards the giants not actually being physically real giants. The most recent film to actually deliver on a premise such as making a monster real in a way that the lead believing in them wasn't just imaginative or crazy I believe for me was Trollhunter, and that was at this point eight years ago. Still, make-believe or not I'm promised a girl fighting giants, and as this disc spins up I'm hoping it's not a case of "the bigger they are."

The Final Master (2015)

Were you aware that Netflix has a category in the genre selection drop down for it's streaming service called "Summer of Love?" I found that out today - and one of these movies didn't look like the others. The Final Master has been floating around on the service for a while, and I just haven't bother watching it yet (I was still partially on burn-out from a martial arts binge previous to seeing it being listed), and figured what an elaborate excuse to watch it when it shows up under such a wacky category? Expectations are tempered towards romance, but can blades slice through the drama and bring in some passionate fight choreography? There's only one way for me to find out.

Pacific Rim: Uprising (2018)

When the first Pacific Rim was getting made, I was stoked - finally some modern day giant robots beating down some giant monsters. It's everything I could have wanted, and when it came out and I watched it I was very content. My first thought upon hearing of a sequel was more of an underwhelming "eh?" than anything else - it isn't that I thought it was going to be terrible or anything of that sort, I just didn't really feel the first one needed a sequel. Well, now that the second one is out I've seen a few reviews on there largely acting like the first was some sort of masterpiece and proclaiming all manner of complaints towards the new one that didn't make sense to me having seen the first. Of course I planned on getting to it at some point, but tonight we form our own opinion and see what happens after the apocalypse has been cancelled.

The Chaperone (2011)

Next week is a good ole action flick lined up, and last week was a spooky haunting movie so I thought this week we'd go for some family-friendly dumb fun. I can't think of something that really says "dumb fun" like the WWE, so when window-browsing on Netflix put the wrestler known as Triple H in front of a school bus of kids, I thought "well why not?" It's not a new trend that wrestlers through their gauntlets into the movie ring - when you think of it wrestling is largely a soap opera combined with sports physicality in the first place, and although I don't imagine each being as successful as The Rock, the movies are usually harmless fun at worst. On that note, let's all sit down and be quiet, it's time for The Chaperone.

Tonight's movie didn't exactly pass me by on the movie radar, it just wasn't one that I was super interested in. Fast forward to it being out for home video, and a friend mentions that they thought it was pretty fun. I've watched movies with far less exceptional recommendations, so I figured why not? As far as I know, "inspired by" very well could be the word of the day - but let's see how the house that guns built plays out.

Batman Ninja (2018)

Batman. He needs no more introduction than that - everyone knows who Batman is at least at some passing level, even those of us who aren't super-big into comics. We've seen 3 different approaches across numerous movies both serious and batty, There's been more animated movies than I can count, and probably more comics than I could fit on a single shelf. Well, being a fan of some animated movies, and hearing a concept as sensible in name and yet absurd as "Batman Ninja," I couldn't resist. Turn on your bat-lights, we might need some rescue.

Dark Star (1974)

Tonight's movie is brought to you by a mishap of names. See, originally I was looking to watch the supposedly scary space Disney movie The Black Hole - but I had a mishap in remembering the name and instead got Dark Star. On the bright side, it turns out this is a John Carpenter movie, and I tend to like those normally - and it's also a comedy, to help balance out from that last horror flick we watched. So, showing that despite living in a space station I still can't tell my stellar bodies apart, let's dig in to this oldie and see if it's any good in the current day.

Silent House (2011)

This movie is like Cotton Eye Joe - I have no idea where it came from, nor where it go. Most movies I find either form word-of-mouth suggestions (or reviews), although occasionally I'll also just peruse the pictures of titles on Netflix as though it was the isles of a Blockbuster Video, on the prowl for a tasty audio-visual morsel. Whichever manner caused this to be added to my list, I can certainly tell you that I didn't really know what I was getting into - for better or worse. Turn off the lights and flick the play button, it's time to see just how silent your house will be.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017)

My first reaction when I heard they were making a Jumanji movie after the first was the same as usual - why? It's not that there isn't fun to be had there, but I don't remember the original one being particularly stellar as far as overall reception - and a quick glance at review aggregators like Rotten Tomatoes tells me I'm not remembering that far off. Then later on I heard that it was going to be a sequel and thought "good for them on not needlessly rebooting something." After seeing the trailer I recall the thought of "that could be a fun movie, but I don't think I'll hit it in theaters." After that, it slipped off the radar and I didn't really hear much about it, until a couple of people I know came in with their thoughts on "it was actually a pretty fun movie" - which brings us up to date to now, when those fateful drums be banging and drawing me in.

Blade Runner 2049 (2017)

I'm going to be honest, like at some point during these I'm not. It's been a little while since I watched the last Blade Runner movie - and I couldn't even tell you what of the thirty (exaggeration) versions I watched. I can tell you that although I can appreciate plenty of scenes within it, and some of the finer moments of the setting and pitch I largely wasn't a huge fan. I enjoyed it, but it didn't resonate with me in the manner that some do where it becomes heralded as one of the best movies ever and I feel compelled to dig into subtext that may not even exist so that I can prove "but this character is totally a robot too!" All of this in mind, when the new one come out my first thought wasn't really why - true, I didn't think it was necessary to follow up on anything from the first but the setting itself merits plenty of other stories to be told - but rather if I should eventually get around to it. That all brings us to today. Get your bathroom breaks taken care off, it's time to get dark with light hints of neon and color grades and chase some blades.

The Mummy (2017)

People forget that long ago, before people even liked comic book movies, Universal was connecting it's stories of monsters in various ways. In it's long stretch of movies, I feel there's always been hits and misses, and any given person could really like one monster (such as Dracula, who always gets the love) and hate another (such as Wolfman whose costume wasn't as impressive). So of course, liking me some monsters, I knew that this rendition of the mummy would be something I'd get around to - heck, the last version of Dracula we got I really enjoyed,  despite it meeting a lukewarm reception at best. Swirl in all the more recent movies that people have cried foul about that I've ended up liking, and there's no reason why I shouldn't imagine that this one will be any different. Still, could this movie make me seem even more like i'm bathing in mercury, or will I end up another in a legion of the judgemental dead?

Beyond Skyline (2017)

Do you all remember that little movie about the people trapped in the high-rise during an alien invasion? To be honest, I forgot most about it as well - I recall thinking it wasn't a bad movie, but beyond that and some minor tidbits here and there, it wasn't a strong enough impression that through the years and figurative thousands of movies I've viewed since that there was any memory real estate left. Then a buddy of mine told me they were making a sequel - and I promptly forgot about that until browsing the queue for new DVDs to add in my Netflix subscription. Then while waiting for it, they put it on streaming, so it got bumped up the list quite a bit when I forgot to send out my last return in time to get a new one this week. Tonight, we get to see just what's beyond the skyline.

Comedy spree! Another surprise documentary-styled movie, I didn't realize this was the case in this one until I had actually started watching it. The last time a movie decided to shout "surprise! Found Footage!" I almost got sick, so hopefully this movie chronicling the misfit band of hit-folk against the actual skilled professional won't meet with such unpleasant results. I expect a laugh or two, I expect some explosions, and I expect that cover art Arnold. Let's see if it can live up to my pretty simple expectations without killing my enjoyment.

Beaches, water, and slow motion. Get ready to keep picking those suits out of your butt crack, tonight's entry is a lovely little shore of action and mystery - or something like that. I'll be honest, I was never one to watch Baywatch, so the extent of my knowledge is pretty much all in that first sentence - not that no previous knowledge has ever hindered me from enjoying something before. Either way, it's time to figure out if it's worth the watch or something to keep at bay.

Rambo (2008)

MV5BMTI5Mjg1MzM4NF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNTAyNzUzMw@@._V1_UX182_CR0,0,182,268_AL_.jpg

Rambo has been a series that's been very back and forth with it's presentation. It's also only the title of a single one of the movies - that being the most recent one (unless after writing this they decide to make more for some dumb reason). Yep, weird little tidbit we can all forget repeatedly. In all honesty, there was slated a comedy for this week, but the movie didn't arrive in the mail, so instead we'll focus on a brutal action movie to help steel your nerves for the release of next review - and honestly, who doesn't like a good action flick?
