The Dead (2010)

June 15, 2014  /  Ken Rupracht

The Dark Continent becomes a dead zone.

  • Slow zombies
  • Different environment (Africa: open plains to deserts)
  • Quick steps things that could be dragged out and too heavy (why America bomb us, then help us? So stupid!)
  • People who aren't complete idiots in a zombie apocalypse, and yet can still have things go wrong
  • "Maybe it's nature telling us to suck it" (paraphrased) theory
  • African drums in soundtrack is nice, and something different
  • Camera has a way of building tension with how its shot

  • Typical no-reason as to why it all started outside of speculative theory (see above)
  • Night scenes are darker for characters than they are for the viewers, lending a "why can't you see that?" divide
  • Time-skip beginning can ruin later plot elements (as they often can do if you pay too much attention)
  • Camera work can at times be a bit annoying when it builds tension for no reason
Opinion

If you're a zombie genre fan (particularly of the slow zombies) then this should probably be a must-watch on your list. It's nice to see a change of environment, and the main cast of two characters keeps things from becoming over complicated as well as allowing you to focus your attentions on their individual plights (as opposed to trying to sympathize with a huge group of different people). Effects work is pretty on par with others of it's genre, but the characters almost seem a bit smarter than most "it's happening!" starters. Viewer be warned, however, that there is no hard ending, and you are kind of left imagining what might have happened next when credits roll.
