Supernatural (2005 - )
Dean Winchester: [Looking at the haunted hotel] We might even run into Fred and Daphne inside. Mmmm... Daphne. Love her.
Supernatural first aired Sept. 13, 2005 on the WB and just started it's sixth season on the CW. Staring Jared Padalecki as Sam Winchester and Jensen Ackles as Dean Winchester who go around the country hunting demon's, monster's and the paranormal. The creation of Eric Kripke, who wanted a road trip show with two guys who fight urban legends and monsters. In his own words "We say it’s a modern American Western - two gunslingers who ride into town, fight the bad guys, kiss the girl and ride out into the sunset again. It's current air time is Friday's at 9pm EST on the CW. Okay enough with that.
My roommates suggested this show to me earlier this year. Right from
the start this show had me hooked and I powered through all 5 season's.
Dean shows up at Sam's college to enlist him in a quest to find their
Dad John (Jeffery Dean Morgan) who had gone "hunting" and hadn't
reported back in. Sam was reluctant at first because he didn't want to
be a hunter, unlike Dean who appears to love the life and has a caviler
attitude about it. This show has everything for me. Classic muscle
car's (a '67 Impala is a main character), classic rock, bad ass
monster's, and an excellent blending of old legend's with a new take.
Plus the cast is great, Jensen and Jared really act like brothers. Add
to that John, Bobbie, Ellen, Jo and a rouge's gallery ranging from
wendigo's to Satan himself (played by none other than Mark Pellegrino).
The guest stars are phenomenal, with Misha Collins, Robert Wisdom, Julie McNiven, Mark Sheppard and Chad Lindberg making repeated appearances throughout the show.
Emotional moments are pretty good without too much over acting. The
action scene's are realistic with correct bullet counts and people
actually getting hurt. Plus the writer's are not afraid to kill main
character's so there is a sense of mortality. The formula for the show
works well - show starts, a classic rock tune belts out (anything from
AC/DC' Back in Black to Bob Seager's Beautiful Loser), Dean drives up in
the Impala, 10 sec opening title, detective action that usually
involves some hot chick all over Dean, monster fight of the week that
generally drops some clue for the season's story arc. The show does on
good job on keeping it week to week while maintaining the large season
spanning story with a build up to the "big bad" fight at the end over
the season, where they use Kansas's Carry On Our Wayward Son to recap
the road so far.
The first 5 season's were actually outlined by Kripke with the idea to
have the show ending after season 5. I was worried that the new head
producer was gonna ruin the epic ending in season 5 (no I'm not gonna
spoil it for ya - go watch, it was awesome!); but after watching the
first episode of season 6 I realize my fears were unfounded. Sera
Gamble, who has been working on the show from season 1, knows what she's
doing and I feel she deserves the chance to prove herself.
All in all, I give this show 5 stars. It has all the right stuff and so little bad that it isn't worth mentioning. So carry on Sam and Dean, I'll be watching.
